Yearbook Marketing
I very recently dipped my toes in broadcast journalism. My staff is converged under HHS Media, but broadcasting is a separate class. However, broadcasting is definitely something I would like to continue experimenting with in different ways.
I decided to go out of my comfort zone and produce this video this year to advertise for the yearbook. I talked to multiple well known teachers at HHS and asked them to speak about what yearbooks mean to them now that they have graduated high school. This video was then used in the advisory slides to talk about the yearbook one morning as well as posted on our staff's Instagram. |

Quill & Scroll Podcast
I joined the Quill & Scroll Advisory Board my junior year and have now been a part of the group for two years. Last year, I participated in a podcast the group put together for Scholastic Journalism Week. We discussed big stories we were working on and how self censorship has affected that coverage.
Social Media Video Use
I have tried to incorporate broadcast video into some of my social media coverage over the years.
On the first day of Scholastic Journalism Week this year, my fellow Editor's in Chief and I recited the First Amendment together and shared it on Instagram as a reel. We have worked to include broadcast journalism onto our social media accounts in this way.

Speaking at LA Convention, Instagram Live
Last year I got the opportunity to speak at the JEA/NSPA conference in Los Angeles. I presented with my fellow editors Riley Thompson and former Virginia Journalist of the Year runner-up Maya Waid, as well as with the superintendent of Harrisonburg City Schools, Dr. Michael Richards.
We live streamed our presentation through Instagram Live so that our followers from our school could watch. We are looking into using this feature of Instagram more often at sporting events or other school activites. |
J-Camp Community Coverage
My first year attending JMU's journalism summer camp in 2019, I created videos with other students on local business owners and community members. In this video, we interviewed an employee at a local pizza place called Benny's.
This was my first experience with broadcast video. |

Blue Streak Broadcasting & WHSV Virginia Journalist of the Year Coverage
When I was awarded with Virginia Journalist of the Year, both my high school's broadcasting class, as well as my city's local news organization (WHSV) covered my award. To the right is Blue Streak Broadcasting's coverage. I was interviewed by their reporters right after learning that I won that state competition.
I later got to talk with a reporter for WHSV about what winning meant to me. Her article and video coverage are linked below. |

Staff Reporter Videos, 2019-20
When students join our staff, we have them try all aspects of journalism to hopefully find an area they truly love. I tried out video a few times for different events as a freshman.
