PHOTO GALLERIES
I got the opportunity to cover the student walkout in response to a Harrisonburg City Schools lawsuit that happened in November of last year. The lawsuit claims that parents are being stripped of their constitutional rights in relation to high school student's current freedom to go by their preferred name in the school environment without parent approval or notice.
I was initially nervous to tackle this event as a photographer because the lawsuit had received a lot of push back from students and parents on both sides of the argument. However, I'm thankful I got the experience because I got to take photos alongside Harrisonburg's local newspaper, the Daily News-Record (DNR), as well as the local news organization (WHSV). |
I often covered cross country and track meets over the past few years. I watched my photographs significantly improve over the past four years of these events as I gained more experience and guidance. A challenge with covering running events is being in the right place at the right time as your subjects never stop moving.

One of my favorite things is getting good pictures of a sport that isn't often photographed. It's exciting for the team to be excited about seeing their pictures online and used in the yearbook.
Covering a gymnastics meet can be difficult to not get in the way, especially because this photo gallery was taken at a meet in our auxiliary gym. |
I recently covered the varsity basketball team, indoor track and sideline cheer's senior night. I spent about an hour running around the gym trying to tell all parts of the story for the team's celebrating. Gym lighting can be hard to work with on a camera, so I made sure to work with the settings before the event.

This photo gallery was my first experience with shooting an event by myself as a freshman. I worked hard to get all my photos edited in Photoshop to have the photos posted online in time.

My first experience taking photos was at a cross country meet when I was a freshman. I remember lugging around the camera and not really knowing what I was doing. Thankfully, one of the editors was on the team as well and she helped me. Since this experience I've made it a goal to get comfortable with a camera. I used to and often still rely on our staff photographer's guidance or the tips on the back of our press passes, shown to the right. However, I love getting back to my computer with my SD card and finding that I took some amazing pictures.
My senior year, my staff also started taking the sports and club group and individual pictures for the yearbook and their programs. This was nerve-wracking for me at first as these teams would be purchasing my photographs like they would from a professional. Despite, my worries, my pictures are all over the team programs at events and uploaded to our staff's SmugMug for purchase. |

To the left is a presentation I made about the session I took the most away from after attending the April 2019 JEA/NSPA convention in DC. I originally joined the newspaper staff with the intent of learning more about photography, so many of the sessions I chose to attend were centered around how to take better pictures.

I took over designing the yearbook my junior year which definitely came with a learning curve. The presentation to the left I created for students to have a resource to go back to if they were confused on the process to correctly place a photograph on a yearbook spread.

This was another presentation I made to teach new staffers our camera policies and procedures. After giving this presentation, we went through stations to learn how to hold the camera, a little bit about settings and how to upload photos from an SD card.
